These Coatings May Be Deposited Using Plasma-assisted Vacuum Deposition Methods (physical Vapor Deposition, Pvd). Due To Low-temperature Coating Growth And Kinetic Limitations, Pvd Methods Allow To Deposit Metastable And Nanostructured Coatings With New And Unique Property Combinations. Today, The Industrially Applied Hard Coatings Are Usually Based On The Nitrides And Carbides Of The Transition Metal Elements, E.g. Tin Or Crn. In The Last Years, Metastable Ti1-xalxn Coatings Have Gained Large Commercial Success. However, Due To The Introduction Of New Tool Applications Like Dry Cutting Or High-speed Cutting, The Demands On Hard Coatings Are Drastically Increasing And Cannot Be Fulfilled Anymore By The Presently Applied Commercial Hard Coatings.
